The Premier League and Champions League have about two months left, which begs the question: what are we going to do this summer?
Mondogoal has one very intriguing option, becoming the first daily fantasy site to offer a Women’s sport of any kind.
The Women’s World Cup takes place June 6 to July 5 in Canada. It features 24 teams from around the world, in a group format followed by knockout play. The United States are favourites, followed by Germany and Brazil. The champion seems likely to come from those 3 teams. England qualified and was placed in Group F along with France, Colombia and Mexico. They are expected to finish 2nd behind France and advance to the knockout stage. The top 2 teams in each group at the end of group play will automatically advance to knockouts while 4 more teams in 3rd place will qualify depending on points accumulated.
Whether Women’s World Cup will take hold is another question. The lack of other options will certainly have some managers willing to give it a shot. Locating statistics and lineups could prove difficult which could give some managers an edge, though may just limit the amount of action that is available.
Regardless of the play that the Women’s World Cup attracts, we have to commend Mondogoal for their flexibility and willingness to explore new opportunities. Daily fantasy sports have long been a boys’ club but for the sake of the industry it would be great to shake that label and be a place anyone can compete.
